Julia Savu Coursework question: How does the writer ‘Of Mice And Men’ and ‘Death Of A Salesman’ present the theme of hopelessness and failure of the American Dream? American Dream: Every women and men should have the opportunity to achieve their goals and their dreams, no matter of their social class or their ability. Hopelessness: Having dreams/goals but knowing there’s a small chance of them being accomplished in future. The writers of the books ‘Of Mice And Men’ and ‘Death Of A Salesman’ have a certain use of words/phrases that demonstrate a clear use of the themes ‘hopelessness’ and ‘failure of the American Dream’. To begin with, John Steinbeck has used the following quote: ‘I could live so easy have a girl maybe’. This quote presents how one of the main characters ‘George’ is feeling hopeless about his dreams as he knows that taking care of Lennie would mean his dreams will be hard to achieve as it is a big responsibility to be with Lennie due to his mental difficulties. Furthermore, the writer has used the phrase: ‘I could live so easy if I didn’t have you on my tail’ gives us a clear suggestion that George is directly telling Lennie how easy his life would be without him.
